About
History
Kon-Tiki is the raft used by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian Islands. It was named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, for whom “Kon-Tiki” was said to be an old name. Kon-Tiki is also the name of the popular book that Heyerdahl wrote about his adventures.
Kon Tiki Shave Ice was born from a battered old 1984 mail truck. It’s new purpose in life is to bring refreshment to Oahu beach-goers.
Hey I’m JP and I started Kon Tiki. I’m 21 and I’m trying to save up money to go to college. I’ve lived in Aiea all my life and graduated from Aiea High School in 2006.
I usually drive the truck and operate one of the shave ice machines. I’m lucky enough to have some good friends to come with me and help with the business.
I can always count on Keenan when the going gets tough. He’s calm and collected even at our busiest times and always has something funny to say. Perhaps one day we’ll make enough to pay him in something other than ice cream.
